Creating a Culture Through Collaborative Conversations

Jody Maberry Show Episode 341 Creating Culture through collaborative conversations“Have other people around you that have different points of view, or related points of view with different perspectives. I think that benefits a lot of people.”

Isn’t it funny how those unplanned hallway conversations drive creativity and collaboration? These unscripted moments can shape cultures and drive creativity. Bob Weis, retired president of Walt Disney Imagineering, returns to share how our unexpected chats can spark innovation and bring teams together.

Before we dove into the impact of those “water cooler convos” Bob and I talked about the fires in Los Angeles. While Bob Weis was having book signings aboard the new Disney Treasure cruise ship, fires threatened his neighborhood near Eaton Canyon. Thanks to his son’s updates and modern technology like Ring cameras, Bob was able to monitor the situation. Though houses just blocks away burned down, his home survived with only smoke damage. What was really neat was hearing how the Disney community, especially Imagineers, rallied together. Former colleagues shared information, offered places to stay, and supported each other. It’s touching to see how Disney’s culture of caring extends beyond the workplace in times of crisis.

That culture of care seems to be part of Disney Imagineering’s “hallway culture” that Bob references. In our increasingly remote world, Bob points out the value those unplanned, serendipitous conversations that happen between meetings or over coffee. Those casual conversations can lead to significant breakthroughs. It’s those moments when someone catches you in passing to share an idea they had last night, or when you notice interesting artwork posted in the hallway that leads to an impromptu brainstorming session.

This is why Bob says physical togetherness matters, especially in creative environments. While remote work has its place, there’s something special about the organic exchange of ideas that happens when diverse teams gather in person. As Bob explained, when you’re creating experiences for audiences that span different ages, cultures and backgrounds, you need those spontaneous interactions between team members who bring varied perspectives. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most valuable conversations aren’t the ones scheduled on our calendars, but rather the unexpected moments of connection that shape an organization’s culture.
