Take Risk to Get Experience
“You’re not just putting a mark on a page; you’re betting on yourself.”
Epic Universe started with a blank page and a lot of bold ideas. Jason Surrell, the originating creative director for Epic Universe, joined me fresh off attending the park’s grand opening. We talked about what it means to take big, creative risks and see them come to life.
Jason has had a remarkable career. Disney Imagineering. Universal. He’s written some of the best-loved books about iconic Disney attractions like The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. But what stood out most to me in this conversation was how he talks about risk, passion, and the power of starting each project with a blank page.
Jason shared how the earliest ideas behind Epic Universe were scribbled out in a conference room. They wrestled with what an immersive theme park could look like if each land had the depth of the Wizarding World or Super Nintendo. He also talked about betting on himself, leaving safe roles to chase creativity, and how every leap shaped the next chapter.
There is a lot of mental and emotional risk with creating. Putting your ideas on paper is tough. Making a move in your career is tough. But Jason reminds us: passion is what gives you the courage to take that first step.
If you’re staring at your own blank page, this episode will nudge you toward making that first mark.
