Making a Dream More than an Idea

“A dream becomes more than an idea when you refuse to give up on it.”

One of the things I enjoy most about conversations with Bob Weis is the way he helps you see familiar stories differently. Bob is the former president of Walt Disney Imagineering and the author of Dream Chasing. After spending decades helping shape Disney parks and experiences around the world, he still approaches creativity with genuine curiosity and excitement.

Bob recently traveled to Kansas City and Marceline, Missouri, where he visited Laugh-O-Gram Studios and Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown. Hearing him describe the experience reminded me that Disney history is more than just famous attractions or movies. It is also about people, places, risks, and persistence.

Bob describes Laugh-O-Gram Studios as the place where Walt’s dream became “more than an idea.” At that point, Walt and Roy Disney were not icons. They were young creators trying to figure things out. They failed there before eventually heading to California to start over. Bob talked about how resilience shaped Walt’s story, and how so many people we have interviewed recently share that same quality. They kept going even when things did not work the first time.

I also loved hearing Bob explain the connection between Kansas City jazz and Steamboat Willie. I had never considered how the rhythm of Mickey’s movement reflected the music Walt grew up hearing in Kansas City. Bob notices details like that everywhere he goes, and it changes the way you experience the story.

Then there was Marceline itself. The train station. Main Street. Walt’s family farm. Bob described it all in a way that made Walt feel human instead of legendary. A real person with a dream who never forgot where he came from.

That may be the biggest lesson of all. Dreams rarely arrive fully formed. They grow because someone keeps believing in them enough to continue the work.
