The New Rules for 2019

“If you rely on a change of the calendar and not a change of the mind to make a difference, you’re doing it wrong.”
You don’t need a new calendar to change your life. You need new rules. Every January, we hear people say, “New Year, New You.” But let’s be honest, flipping a calendar doesn’t flip a switch in our habits. That’s why this year, instead of resolutions, I’ve committed to six new rules. These aren’t pressure-packed goals. They are guiding principles that will help shape how I live, lead, and grow in 2019. This year, I invited my friend Jeff Noel to unpack these five powerful quotes with me.
Rule #1 Urgency. Aa reminder that this year is all I’ve got. I want to live like it matters.
Rule #2 Play. I know I can work hard and still have fun. Life isn’t all hustle. My kids are young, and I want to be present and playful with them.
Rule #3 Sleep. The one thing I often push aside. But not this year. Good rest is a powerful performance enhancer.
Rule #4 I Will. This reinforces resolve. Not “I’ll try” or “I’m fixing to.” Just “I will.”
Rule #5 Use more four-letter words like “love,” “help,” and “gift.” These words have power.
Rule #6 Speak Up. Sharing ideas boldly, encouraging others, and using my voice.
What I love about creating rules is they’re personal. They shape behavior, not just intentions. They remind me daily of what matters and how I want to show up in the world.
Whether you borrow these or create your own, consider setting rules instead of resolutions. They’re simple, intentional, and stick with you long after the January motivation fades.
