Lessons from a Disney Programs Event

JMS episode 374 with Djuan Rivers“The audience may never notice the work behind the curtain, but they feel it.”

When you’ve been around Disney people long enough, you realize their secret to the magic is meticulousness. I saw it firsthand at a recent event for Disney College Program students where Bob Weiss and Djuan Rivers shared their stories. I had a front-row seat to the way it all came together, and it reminded me that excellence never happens by accident.

Before anyone stepped on stage, my inbox filled with emails. Dozens of them. Schedules, run-downs, reminders. Every detail was mapped out. At first, it seemed like too much, but once I saw how seamlessly everything unfolded, it made sense. You can’t overcommunicate when you’re chasing excellence.

Every element had an owner. Someone made sure the slides looked perfect, another made sure the speakers knew where to be and when. There was even someone whose job was to turn Bob’s notes into note cards so he wouldn’t shuffle loose paper on stage. That tiny adjustment made the moment look polished and professional. It wasn’t showy. It was intentional.

Those are the things that are often forgotten. The audience may never notice the work behind the curtain, but they feel it. A well-planned event feels effortless, just like a well-run team or a well-designed day in the parks.

The event wrapped with students lined up to meet the speakers. Some had lugged their books in from home hoping to connect. While I watched them, I thought about how the small details such as the green ticket invitations or walk-on music, created an experience that will make the lessons that much more memorable. People may not understand the sweat behind the scenes, but the feeling it gives them will never be forgotten.
