It’s Time to Unlearn What You Know

It's time to unlearn what you know

If your systems burned to the ground, how would you rebuild them?”

When you stop asking questions, you stop learning. That’s a sign it might be time to unlearn. A recent Clubhouse conversation with Katie Currens and other members of the Perch community about something I think we don’t talk about enough: unlearning. Cassie Tucker joins me again as we unpack what it really means to let go of outdated processes, ideas, or habits. Yes, even ones that we think have “worked” for years.

Lee Cockerell is a perfect example of this. At 78, he’s still learning and unlearning. And in this fast-changing world, that mindset is more important than ever. It doesn’t matter if it’s podcast workflows or daily habits. Rethinking your systems isn’t a weakness. It’s a leadership strength.

Think about it this way. What happens when someone new joins your team and asks, “Why do you do it this way?” Sometimes, the answer is “Because I always have.” That’s the moment to pause, reflect, and maybe rebuild.

This was such a great conversation about learning vs. fixed mindset, how processes can be both rigid like a tree and flexible like a flower, and why asking “What would I do if I had to start from scratch?” can unlock new potential.
