How You Operate Makes the Magic

“It’s not magic that makes it work. It’s the way we work that makes it magic.”
One of my favorite traditions on the show is when a guest returns to ask me three surprise questions. This time, it was Denella Ri’chard, and the conversation that followed was as meaningful as it was unexpected. We talked about travel, Disney magic, and the life philosophies that shape how we show up in the world.
Denella asked me about my “living list” destinations. Not a bucket list, but the places I truly want to experience while I’m alive and well. I shared two: Australia, because of the people (and Dan Cockerell being there now), and Austria, where my teenage pen pal Manuela still lives. That question was an unexpected reminder that meaningful connections can last decades and span continents.
Then we talked Disney. It’s hard not to be drawn in by how Disney creates consistent magic for so many people, across so many touchpoints. The operations, the cast members, the shared purpose. It’s a masterclass in culture and leadership. I may love natural parks even more, but I see a surprising alignment between national parks and theme parks. Both create moments that turn into stories.
And finally, Denella asked about a quote I live by. I shared one from Admiral Payne, Dan Cockerell’s grandfather: “Do your best and forgive yourself.” That sums up how I try to move through life. Do the best you can with what you have, then give yourself grace and keep going.
Make sure to listen to this episode to hear the great questions and heart Denella yet again brings to our conversation.
