Finding Meaning in Your Work

JMS ep 359

“Even if no one remembers your name, your work can live on.”

Sometimes the best conversations happen when you have no idea what’s coming. That’s exactly what happened when Chip Huth returned to the show and took over the mic. This time he is asking me the questions. It’s a tradition I enjoy. When a guest comes back, I hand them the reins and let them ask three questions, no prep. Chip didn’t disappoint.

His first question didn’t waste any time going deep. “What gives your life meaning?” A recent trip to Chile with The Nature Conservancy was fresh on my mind. I traveled with DJuan Rivers, a former Disney executive, and spent time with locals who had just saved over 300,000 acres of wilderness. It was humbling. As someone who spent years as a park ranger, I felt reconnected to that part of myself. That trip reminded me my future may still hold something meaningful in conservation. I don’t know how or when, but I believe that door will open.

The second question: “If you were marooned with your family and could bring two more people, who would they be?” My first thought? A musician. Jason Harrod, a dear friend and incredible artist, was an easy pick. The second person? That was tougher. Do I choose someone practical or someone who tells great stories? Chip pointed out that I led with joy over survival. And he’s right. Music and connection matter deeply to me.

Finally, he asked what I’m most excited about in the year ahead. Between new projects with the Cockrell Academy, upcoming workshops, and finally finishing my book, I’ve got plenty to look forward to. That anticipation fuels my focus now.

Take a listen to the full conversation and ask yourself the same three questions. You might be surprised where your answers take you.
