Combining Your Passions

JMS episode 364 combining passions

“Theme parks and national parks may seem different, but they are both in the people business. Each offers a chance to step away from stress and into something extraordinary.”

I’ve always loved the outdoors and the wonder of storytelling. For years, I kept those two passions separate. Park ranger Jody on one side, podcast host and storyteller Jody on the other. But over time, I realized they weren’t separate at all. They were threads of the same story. When I first started working with Lee Cockerell, I didn’t know much about Disney. But through Lee’s lessons, and later visiting Disney World myself, I began to notice something remarkable. The same principles that created magic in a theme park were also at work in national parks. Both pay attention to detail, care for people, and a commitment to creating unforgettable experiences.

One of the most memorable moments for me was riding the safari at Animal Kingdom with DeJuan Rivers and Dr. Scott. Hearing how intentional they were about design and animal care reminded me so much of what I admired in rangers. There is a pride in protecting a place and sharing it with others. Whether in Glacier National Park or on a Disney attraction, the magic comes from people who serve with humility and passion.

Reflecting on these connections, I see how combining passions has opened up doors I never expected. Everything from podcasting with Lee, to guest lecturing on Alaskan cruises, to exploring untouched wilderness in South America. It’s a reminder that our interests don’t have to compete; sometimes, the best things happen when they collide. There’s a richness in seeing the overlap, and I find myself more curious than ever about what lies ahead, both in parks and in life. And in the middle of these stories, I think you’ll catch a glimpse of what keeps me chasing the next adventure.
