Building Relationships Through Podcasting

“When you treat a guest like they’re visiting your home, you build trust that lasts long after the episode ends.”
When I think about what podcasting has done for me, the biggest thing isn’t the shows, the gear, or even the downloads. It’s the people. Building relationships through podcasting has been one of the best surprises of my career.
When Matthew Miller asked how I turn podcast guests into real friends, my answer was simple: I care. I don’t invite anyone on the show unless I’m truly interested in who they are. I want to know their story, their lessons, and what makes them light up. When someone feels seen and valued, a real connection starts to form.
One of my favorite examples is from a few years back. I was at a parks conference and ended up standing in line for lunch behind John Jarvis, who was the Director of the National Park Service at the time. I’d always wanted to interview him, but my emails had gone unanswered. That day, I saw my chance. Instead of a quick hello, I mentioned a story I’d heard about him from another ranger. His face lit up, and we started talking. Not long after, we were recording an episode together, right under a giant taxidermied grizzly bear.
That experience reminded me that real relationships start with curiosity and kindness, not strategy.
For anyone trying to build something, whether it’s a brand, a show, or a business, my advice is to be genuine. Know what you stand for and say it out loud. My friend Matthew calls himself America’s Theme Park Technologist. That title tells you exactly who he is and what he loves.
Podcasting has taught me that every great relationship begins with curiosity. When you focus on making others feel valued, those connections can turn into friendships that last far beyond the microphone.
